Today in reading we focused on asking ourselves questions. Together, we asked questions before, during, and after reading a chapter in our class read aloud - Because of Winn Dixie. Students did an excellent job of coming up with questions for the text. We charted them together. After our group lesson, the students began their independent reading. They were given post-it notes to keep track of their own questions while reading. I think they really enjoyed this lesson!
We are finishing up our first full week of school - and we have accomplished so much already!! In reading we have been focusing on "How to Build a Readers Life." Students have been learning how to choose just right books, how to make goals and track progress, and how to find a great spot to read that will allow them to "Real Read." We have also been completing our beginning of the year testing. Students read books with me and are assessed through a program called mClass. Most students are familiar with this testing! In math we have completed our place value review, learned addition strategies, and we are currently working on subtraction with regrouping. Subtraction with regrouping seems to be a difficult concept to grasp. If you are having trouble or just want extra practice - here is an interactive subtraction site! http://www.softschools.com/math/subtraction/3_digit_subtraction/3_digit_subtraction_with_regrouping/ AMAZING NEWS! Our class has 2 new iPad Mini's! We were able to purchase these iPads through donations from a site called Donors Choose. We are slowly introducing them into our daily schedule. Students have been earning reward time to read on EPIC books on the ipad, and today we used them for small group math work! It will be very exciting to see what else we can use these iPads for! Check out the pictures below! Students completed an assigned math problem on a task card, scanned the QR code on the card, and the iPad reveals the correct answer! This is an awesome tool to hold students accountable during center time! ![]() **This math group was so excited to use the iPad today!** In addition to all of our testing and learning, we are also getting ready for our Kid President Open House next week. Parents! Come out to Open House on Thursday, September 22 from 6-7 to see what your Kid President does each and every day! They are preparing a presentation for you. :) I will continue to update the classroom blog! I hope to take more pictures during the weeks once testing is over! ~ Miss Rokosz Our first week of school has been great so far! Everyone is getting to know each other very quickly. :) We have been working on classroom routines and rules all week but we have also had time for some reading, writing, math, and even computers!
I am so excited for a great year! <3 Miss Rokosz Above: Green Day in honor of the Grinch! Below: Two of our Wacky Tacky girls!! :) The students LOVED the field trip to the YMCA. They learned very valuable skills that will help them be safe in the water!
We are definitely a group of math lovers in room F3! Students have been focusing on fractions in math, mastering concepts including equivalent fractions and fractions on a number line! We have completed some very fun and interactive activities during this unit that the students have loved! Above you can see a student placing a fraction on the number line in the correct place. We practiced partitioning number lines to show certain fractional units, labeling our number lines, and finding the distance between two fractions on number line. In this activity, students worked with a partner to match shaded models to the fractions. :) We did a similar activity with equivalent fractions!
Can you believe it?! It is 2016 already. We have learned so much so far and are looking forward to our accomplishments in class for the rest of our year!!
Please know that students will begin with middle of the year reading testing this week. Students will be tested on fluency, accuracy, and comprehension. Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and eats a good breakfast. :) We will also have our 2nd district reading benchmark in a few weeks! Practice those reading strategies!! Update: WE RECEIVED OUR DONORS CHOOSE GRANT AND ALL STUDENTS NOW HAVE A "MOUSE" FOR THEIR LAPTOP! THEY WERE SO EXCITED!!! PICTURES TO FOLLOW SOON. :) MISS ROKOSZ <3 Hi Families!
We have started a donors choose project to raise money to get mice for all of our student laptops in the classroom. :) If you are interested in reading about the project or spreading the word: please follow the link below.. http://www.donorschoose.org/project/mice-would-be-nice-help-us-to-optimize/1763716/?rf=link-siteshare-2015-12-teacher-teacher_3161335&challengeid=20655630 We have already almost met our goal!
